Dementia is a progressive brain disorder affecting more than 400,000 Australians in 2018 and it is estimated that the numbers will exceed 500,000 by 2025. Every day, an estimated 250 Australians are diagnosed with dementia, but families and friends notice the changes from 3 to 5 years before formal diagnosis.

There are increasing numbers of younger Australians experiencing the changes of dementia due to neurological injuries and other neurological conditions. Current estimates are 26,000 in 2018.

Senior Helpers have developed expertise in the support of clients and their families who live with the changes of dementia. We can make your loved one’s life, and yours, much easier and enjoyable with our assistance. You don’t have to do it alone.

We create customised plans of care and support that changes as the person living with dementia’s needs and abilities change. Our care team have extensive training and expertise in providing the right level of individualised care and support while carefully monitoring everything from medications to daily activities. We utilise the Senior Gems® approach to create a positive environment that focuses on what the person who has dementia can do, not on what they can no longer do.

What is Senior Gems®?
Senior Gems® helps our staff assess and provide appropriate support and care for persons with Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

The Senior Gems® were created by Senior Helpers, based on the overall approach to care created and developed by Teepa Snow, Positive Approach, LLC. It is a method for identifying the characteristics of aging, from normal aging through early and late-stage dementia that many Australians are now facing. Senior Gems® focuses on what is unique and precious about each person, and although changes take place as the disease progresses, Senior Helpers focus on what these individuals can do with the skills and abilities they still have to continue to live a purposeful life at home. It’s all about taking a positive approach and using strategies that will work.

The Gems staging system allows our trained support staff to:
  • Identify the characteristics of the differing stages of dementia
  • Understand what a person can still do according to their gem level
  • Use evidence-based strategies based on each gem level to support clients
  • Create the best plan for supporting the person long term
