World MS Day 2022

Connections – “I Connect, We Connect”

With the theme ‘Connections’, World MS Day 2022  celebrates solidarity and the building of community connection, self-connection and connections to quality care.

Affecting more than 25,000 people in Australia, MS is a chronic disease that interferes with nerve impulses within the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. Many people may not be aware that the average diagnoses age is 20-40 years old and MS is three times more common in women than in men. People who have a close relative with the condition are also at an increased risk.

Whilst there is no known cause or cure, it is important to recognise symptoms and types of MS to seek a diagnosis and treatment options, and determine the support networks available to you to live well with MS.

Part of living well with MS is adapting lifestyle and rediscovering connections, such as:

Regular Exercise—look at ways to exercise in the home and outdoors seasonally, being as active as possible. This might include morning walks in a local park, enjoying sitting at the beach, or an outing with your bestie (four legged fur friends included).

Mood foods—simple changes in your nutrition can improve not only heart health but also mood. This can be by increasing your intake of fibre and reducing fat, in conjunction with regular exercise to strengthen muscles.

Wellness—research shows people living with MS are more likely to experience anxiety or depression, so there’s no better time than now to be mindful of our wellbeing, including greater awareness of our mental health.

Connecting with the right social support and professional help for managing the impact on mental health can be equally important to managing the physical aspects of living with MS. At Senior Helpers, our Support Workers undertake a specialised training support program to give staff the necessary training and skills to create personalised support for people living with MS.
